Local food in feast’s spotlight / Field to Fork event Saturday
BY JIM ALGIE
SUN TIMES STAFF The Grey Bruce Agricultural and Culinary Association will step out of the market and into the kitchen in Owen Sound Saturday with a paywhat- you-can feast featuring the talents of eight area chefs cooking donated locally-grown meats and produce. The Field to Fork Feast at the Grey Granite Club in Owen Sound opens at 11:30 a.m. and is scheduled to run through 8 p.m. with servings at noon and at 1:30 p.m. and continuing while supplies last. The afternoon also features a keynote talk at 12:40 p.m. by chef Michael Stadtlander. Stadtlander’s world-famous Grey County restaurant, Eigensinn Farm, has popularized the use of fresh local ingredients and helped support the local food movement that has since emerged throughout Ontario. This summer, Stadtlander was host to a Canadian Chef’s Congress at Eigensinn Farm where Grey and Bruce county products received new attention from some of the country’s best cooks. Ontario Tourism Alliance executive director Rebecca LeHeup-Bucknell is also to speak during the first sitting of Saturday’s meal. The event is the brain child of Robin Pradhan, whose Rocky Raccoon Cafe opened in Owen Sound almost a year ago. ![]() Since Pradhan opened last winter, the business has flourished at least partly because of promotions by the year-old Grey Bruce Agricultural and Culinary Association, a group of farmers, food processors, retailers and restaurateurs promoting the use of local foods by area residents. The association’s website and culinary map of Grey and Bruce counties features more than 100 participants. Referrals to his restaurant through association promotions and the surge of enthusiasm he got from this summer’s chef’s congress got Pradhan thinking about what he could do to further the cause. The Field to Fork concept also fits plans by the culinary association to include community events. The association hopes not only to spread the word ![]() |
